In the upper floor of this shopping mall, one can find the Bierhalle Katowice, a brew pub with restaurant, or as it is called in Polish: “Browar – Restauracja”.

Entering the pub, the visitor recognizes the intentional striking contrast: Technical atmosphere (an exposed ceiling construction, the air-conditioning, electrical and lighting installations clearly visible) and Bavarian folklore, waitresses in dirndl and lederhosen, white and blue flags everywhere. Ah, the Polish version of „laptops and lederhosen“, it suddenly came up to me …

The most eye-catching for me, however, was the brewing installation in the middle of the room, surrounded by the bar and dominating the interior – it is made of fire resistant glass, and the guest can watch the mash and wort during the brewing process. Fascinating, unfortunately today, 18th June 2009, not in operation, though.

eye-catcher

Outside, on the mall’s roof, there is a large terrace, but it was way too hot today to sit in the sun.

The selection of beers brewed on the premises is limited to Wheat, Pilsner and Märzen, no surprises, no experiments. And to make matters worse, I could just try the Märzen – having to drive on with my car, I did not want to risk being fined for driving under influence. The Märzen (or “Marcowe”, as it is called here) tasted excellent, very aromatic, spicy and full of character. In addition, I could find a wide range of good and inexpensive food in an interesting combination of Polish and Bavarian regional cuisine.

Pictures

Bierhalle Katowice
Silesia City Center
ulica Chorzowska 107
40-101 Katowice
Polen

A gigantic old steel mill in the middle of Katowice has been closed down and converted into an equally gigantic shopping mall: the Silesia City Center.
