20th April 2011, a beautiful spring day, saw us visiting the small, but very nice Brewery Tumski, located in an old building from the 19th century, directly at the beautifully renovated market square in the city of Płock. Upon entering the restaurant, you will immediately see the polished to a mirror 2.5 hl copper brewing vessels, produced by Kaspar Schulz Company from Bamberg. Since 2008, on this installation the young brewer, Michał Sobociński, produces a broad range of interesting beers. And obviously, he does it in excellent quality – right next to the copper kettles, you can find the certificate from the 2009 craft beer contest in Żywiec, in which the Tumski brewery won the third place in the Wheat Beer category.

We found a comfortable place on the terrace and could enjoy the warm spring sun. Four different beers were noted in the menu, and I asked the young, somewhat uncertain, but very friendly waiter, whether it would be possible to taste the beers without having to order large quantities of each. Sure, no problem, and after a second I got four shot glasses standing in front of me, each containing a different beer: A Wheatbeer / Hefeweizen (a slight yeasty bitterness, but full of character, with strong hints of cumin), a Honey-Wheat (sweet and heavy), a Caramel / Karmelowe (tasting rather like a root beer than a real caramel beer) and a Stout (black, bitter, but not as roasty as the dark colour initially promised).
a quick tasting flight
I carefully tasted the beers and finally decided for a large glass of stout for lunch. A good choice – it fit perfectly with the spicy, rustic Polish specialty plate, which I had ordered. Żurek, Bigos, Polish Crakovian sausages, potatoes, pickles, onions – everything, what tastes good and is unhealthy …

Some more facts: The beer brewed on the premises is proudly sold in bottles, too; so the real beer aficionado can try it at home as well. And during summer time, under the interesting names of “Świt” and “Zmierzch” (“Dawn” and “Dusk”), two freshly mixed beer drinks are on offer: “Dawn” is a mixture of 60% Wheat Beer and 40% grapefruit juice, while “Dusk” is 60% Stout mixed with 40% black currant juice.
Conclusion for today: A successful trip. Płock as an industrial town with a huge refinery does not attract tourists too much, actually; but if you finally have reached the market place, and you are sitting on the beautiful terrace, enjoying the Tumski beers, then you are definitively happy to have taken a small detour leading you here!
