On the northern edge of the Łódź city centre, there once was a huge weaving – an industrial plant in a huge brick complex consisting of several buildings founded by Izrael Poznański in the 19th Century. After an eventful history, it ceased operation in the early nineties of the twentieth century. It took sixteen years to arise from the ruins of a listed building, and in 2006, a huge shopping and leisure centre opened.
In the middle of this huge shopping centre there is a Bierhalle brewpub. A large bar, comfortably furnished and spread to several levels, so that that the guests are distributed evenly and slightly separated. In the entrance, the typical glass vessels built by Joh. Albrecht Company are located – both brewing kettles are made of fire resistant glass and you can watch the wort and the beer during the brewing process. Behind a large glass wall in the lower floor, we can find the fermentation and storage tanks. In front of the Bierhalle, there is a nice beer garden overlooking the action areas in the mall’s courtyard. In 2007, the Bierhalle in Łódź was awarded “Polish Micro Brewery of the Year”.

Besides some seasonals, you can always find three standard offers: A tasty and round Wheat, full-flavored with banana scent; a fresh and bitter Pils – unusually for a brew pub, it is obviously stored sufficiently long and cold; and finally, a powerful Märzen, crisp and refreshing beer with a coarse character.
But where is light, there usually is shade as well. Although the young waitresses are pretty and attractive, dressed nicely in Bavarian dirndls, but as a deterrent showing grumpy faces. They do not seem to be really happy with their work – and that provides a feeling of not being very welcome. And, additionally – at least during our stay on 29th April 2011 – in the beer garden you feel a distinct and very unpleasant smell from the drains, which spoils the good Bavarian food experience.
Given the wonderful atmosphere with live music and dancing in the mall’s entertainment area, we enjoyed our stay in the beer garden anyway; however, we were not satisfied for one hundred percent.
