Addendum 26th April 2011: Today at last brought me the longed-for opportunity to visit the Bierhalle in the Arkadia shopping centre. The beer garden is located right at the main entrance and square in front of the shopping mall, and in the warm spring sun, I could sit here and enjoy the beer.

However, the pleasure was quite limited. The offered Altbier was fruity and estery, with a fine and refreshing sour note – well, more reminiscent of a not yet fully developed dark wheat beer than of an original true-to-style Altbier. The Pilsner was very mild, quite appealing, but would have deserved a stronger hopping. And the Hefeweizen was very ambivalent. The first one was perfectly fine, only if you want to be hypersensitive, you might miss an even more intense banana aroma. The second one however, served one and a half hours later, had a distinctly sulphurous smell – a touch of hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs) wafted over the beer. Well, was it another batch, another storage tank that had been tapped meanwhile? I don’t know …

Too bad, because the ambience, the glass brewery, the cosy interior, the beer garden – all this is only worth a half without enjoying a tasty beer.

Actually, the brewery Bierhalle is located in the Arkadia shopping centre, north of Warsaw’s city centre, and it flaunts with a “glass brewery”, that is an installation, where the mash tun and pan are made of glass and you can watch the wort and the beer in the making. Unfortunately though, when I was in Warsaw on 28th September 2007, I only had the chance to visit the brewery taproom in the famous Nowy Świat street – but still better, than nothing at all.

The beer however, did not convince me. It was obviously not matured long enough, the carbonic acid not yet bound well. It tasted just like one of my homebrews during bottling time, before lagering. Could it be that the brewing and lagering capacity cannot keep up with the sales?

Anyway, at least, it is nice to sit in the small beer garden at Warsaw’s promenade! Inside, the taproom is quite comfortable and cosy, and as far as the glass brewery is concerned, one can at least, admire the beautiful posters and signs showing the glass vessels.

Let’s hope that during my next visit in Warsaw I can make it to the “Arkadia” shopping centre!
