More than 460 years of brewing tradition – to express is exactly: since 1550 – make this beautiful Franconian brewery one of the oldest in the region. Located at the main road in Würgau, nobody driving through the village can miss it – in particular, as you can see already from a far the copper brewing vessels through the large windows.

The Hartmann Brewery just recently began to focus on quality, and apart from excellent food it surprises every now and then with interesting, sometimes quite exotic beers. Apart from the regionally widespread standard offer (Helles, Pilsner, Dark, and Wheat Beer), a very aromatic Schwarzbier is on offer under the name of “Erbschänk 1550”; further, the brewery tries to lure car drivers and motorcyclists with a beer with reduced alcohol content in smaller bottles (“Biker Beer”); and in summer there is a Felsenkellerbier on offer, which in this case is brewed with a portion of peated malt (whisky malt). The cuisine focuses on regional specialities of highest quality. A simple salad with a home-made orange-ginger-rosemary-chutney for refinement; local hunters provide excellent pheasant; and the menu offers many more culinary surprises.

During our visit on 31st December 2011, it was unusually quiet at midday – obviously, everybody prepared himself for the big New Year’s Eve buffet. And so, the owner of the brewery and restaurant had a moment of leisure time to talk to us. Enthusiastically, she talked about her plans for the New Year’s Eve buffet, and about the fact that 2012 will be a very special year: The Hartmann family owns this brewery inn for exactly 100 years – this is for sure a reason to be proud of!
Overall, a very pleasant visit in a nice brewery – in a way better and friendlier atmosphere than about 20 years earlier. As previously stated in my old notes about this brewery inn:
“At a time when I was not yet systematically reconnoitring breweries, on 7th May 1992, whilst comfortably riding from Bamberg to Bayreuth, we more or less randomly stranded in the Brewery Inn Hartmann.
found by chance
The brewery provided an ideal solution to satisfy our hunger: The rural food (boiled brisket of beef, and roasted pork) was cooked to perfection and tasted great; and the Wheat Beer turned out to be round, creamy, with a firm aroma of overripe bananas. Lovely!
If only the waitress would not have been that grumpy and unfriendly – she gave us the clear impression that we would just provide unnecessary workload. Unfortunately, this was way worse than the sometimes rough, but traditional Bavarian peevishness. And it happened right here in Franconia, where people usually are so nice and friendly …”
